Notes for James MURPHY:
General Notes: James was a Railway fettler, joining the NSW Railway Dept and starting work on the Goulburn-Harden line construction job at 14 years of age. He remained in the employ of the Department for 40 years, retiring in 1920. He was a ganger at Young for many years.
Roy Murphy said that he remembers many stories that his mother told him. One was about James and Alice’s wedding day. He said she told him that many people came to the wedding from around the area travelling by horse or horse and sulky. Many families coming to the wedding, including the Butts family, met for lunch at James’s parents home between Monteagle and Bendick Murrell, before travelling on to the wedding in the Roman Catholic Church at Murringo.
Roy Murphy said that his Father paid 50 pounds for 2 blocks of land in Young, one with a large peppercorn tree in the yard.
