Note: MRS. GEORGE MAIR MRS. GEORGE MAIR The death of Mrs. Mair, widow of the late Mr. George Mair, who died in a private hospital at Marrickville on Monday April 19, in the 87th year, breaks a link with the earliest pioneers of the Murrumbidgee Valley. The late Mrs. Mair was the daughter of John Jenkins, of Nangus Station, Gundagai. It was at Nangus that Mrs. Mair was born 87 years ago. The Jenkins family was well-known throughout the whole of Riverina, being one of the earliest pastoral families' to settle in this part of the State. The Mair family was also a very old pioneer family. The first Geo. Mair was mayor in Wagga in 1878, and the family at that time was residing in Thorne-street, opposite Bird Park. Mr. Mair was the owner of Duro Station, Yass. The eldest son of this family, George, married Miss Jenkins, and there were seven children of the marriage: Allan, of Forbes; Leila (Mrs. Moore), Mittagong; and Ray, Police Station, Henty. Two sons, Colin and Laurie, and a daughter, Minna (Mrs. Fennell) pre deceased their mother. Another son, Malcolm George, was killed in France in the Great War of 1914-18. After the death of her husband, which occurred about 35 years ago, Mrs. Mair lived with her sister, Mrs. Steel Beveridge, and other members of her family. Mrs. Mair, although at a very advanced age, continued to lead a most active life up till recently when she suffered from a sudden illness, and a few days later died. The funeral took place on Wednesday, April 21 in the Church of England portion of Rookwood Cemetery. The Henty Observer and Culcairn Shire Register (NSW : 1914 - 1950) Friday 7 May 1943 p 1 Article |
