Note: Raymond Edward Hurst, NX35228 2/19th Battalion. Transferred from Singapore as part of B force, He had been in Changi, sent to Sandakan 7th July 1942 his record said he died 2nd April 1945. Because the Scandal of Sandakan was covered up for many years after WW2, his mother never gave up writing for years to find out what happened to her son,. she did find out when and how he died before she passed away. The family story Ray had his appendix removed in the camp he was sick and could not work. He was killed by a Japanese bayonet. |

WAGGA, Tuesday. One of the best known mail coach contractors in this part of the State, Mr. Charles Hurst, was killed today. He left Wagga this morning with a load of mail and a passenger, Mr. Doherty, who had an arrived from Sydney, and was proceeding to Wantabadgery Station on a holiday visit. When the coach was about 16 miles from Wagga one of the wheels ran into a deep rut. The vehicle turned right over, pinning the two men underneath. Mr. Doherty, after great difficulty, freed himself, and crawled from underneath. He tried to move the heavy load off Hurst, but failed to do so, and then walked to a farm for help. When assistance arrived the vehicle and horse were moved, and Hurst's body was recovered. His neck had been broken, and death had apparently been instantaneous. Hurst had been driving the same mail for over 20 years, and was highly respected by the settlers INQUEST An inquest in his death was held on the same day of his death in Wagga. |
