Hiram William Howard rode Valentine into 3rd place at 20 to 1 in the Melbourne Cup in 1870 at the age of 14 years, after walking the horse from Albury to Melbourne in company of the Owner-Trainer |
Note
|
Hiram William Howard like his father, he was also known as an Ace Jockey in and around the Howlong area. At the tender age of 13 years and weighing only 6 stone 4 pounds he was the youngest jockey to ride in the 1870 Melbourne Cup. Riding a horse called Valentine he finished a close third, the odds were at 20/1 and paid winnings of $40 (todays value). Other wins to his credit were, the Albury Cup on Lady owned by Burns The Snagger, a race in Beechworth and he won the first everV.C.R Oaks on a horse called Formosa. At one time he (Hiram William) commanded a mine sweeping crew to keep the Albury section of the Murray River safe. At another time he had the Royal Coach Mail Run between Corowa, Howlong and Albury, and also the Handsom Cab service. In the early 1900s he had the license for the Court House Hotel, as did 3 of his brothers and sister Clara. In 1914 he had the Federation Hotel in Townsend Street, Albury, 3 houses in Pemberton Street, Albury, 2 houses in Macauley Street, Albury, as well as quite a few blocks of land in Howlong. |
