He was reported as missing in action whilst in France in July 1916 and was taken prisoner in Germany on the 19th of July 1916. He was repatriated to England on the 22nd of April 1918. In 1918 and 1919 he was charged with being Absent without Leave several times. He returned to Australia in January 1920.
